Telangana Education : Osmania University Awaits AP Govt’s Nod for Common SET

Osmania University will conduct State Eligibility Test (SET) for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, for recruitment of assistant professors and lecturers, if the AP government agrees for a common test for both states.

Vice-chancellor of Osmania University, Prof S Satyanarayana, on Sunday, told press persons that the State Council for Higher Education requested the government of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to grant permission to conduct State Eligibility Test for both states by the Osmania University.

A Government Order has been issued by the Telangana government allowing Osmania University to conduct Telangana SET for 2014 and 2015. If any decision is not arrived at, he said, Osmania University would go ahead with notifying for the posts in another two weeks time. OU had conducted the test for erstwhile united AP in the year 2012. Following which the UGC has given further accreditation to the varsity to conduct the test for 2013, 2014 and 2015.

An attempt to hold a joint SET for two new states, according to him, is in consideration of the larger interest of candidates aspiring to the posts of assistant professors/lecturers in the universities as UGC has already given accredition to the Osmania University to conduct the test for 2014 and 2015.

Satyanarayana, who is demitting office of the VC on Monday, also announced start of a new five-year BE-MTech integrated course in the varsity. According to him, admission for the new course would be notified separately from EAMCET. He said, the new course is expected to generate a revenue of `40-50 cr for the cash strapped university. The university’s budget amounts to `170 cr where as the required funding is `230cr. “`27-28 cr is our monthly expenditure and we get about `14 cr from government,” he said.

About National Assessment and Accreditation Council’s (NAAC) accreditation for the varsity, he said that the administration was hopeful of receiving the certification in a couple of months. He pointed out that the formalities towards NAAC accreditation has been going on since the last three years of his tenure as VC and that OU along with AU were at the same level in0 receiving the accreditation. Osmania University, which will complete 100 years in 2018, he said, is hopeful of receiving `100 cr from centre along with a ‘heritage status’. June 30 edition of ‘India Today’, India Today-Neilsen Best Univerisities survey 2014 has stated OU as  the best university among all state universities of the country.
